David Forsyth (chess player)

David Forsyth (born May 16, 1854 in Alness , † December 30, 1909 in Dunedin ) was a Scottish chess player .

Life

Forsyth was also the chess editor for the Glasgow Weekly Herald newspaper. He was best known for a short notation of chess positions that he had presented in the same newspaper in 1883. The notation was later u. a. named after him. This Forsyth-Edwards notation represents the position of the figures using letters: lowercase letters are white figures, capital letters are black. Empty fields are noted using numbers ("3" for three connected empty fields within the same row). This notation was expanded in modern times by Steven J. Edwards so that it can be read by computers .

After emigrating to New Zealand , he won the New Zealand chess championship in 1901.
