David I. (Georgia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David I ( Georg. დავით I; † 881 ), also Dawit I , was ruler of Tao-Klardschetien from 876 to 881 . He belonged to the Bagratid dynasty and carried the title of Kuropalates .

David, son of Bagrat I , pursued politics in favor of Armenia . He was murdered in 881 by his cousin Nasra, who was supported by Byzantium and Egrisi-Abkhazia , as both feared the influence of Armenia. A civil war then broke out. His son Adarnase IV did not become ruler of Tao-Klardschetiens and king of Georgia until 888 . In the meantime Gurgen I of Tao was the last to bear the Byzantine title of Kuropalaten.
