David Nott (* 1956 in Carmarthen ) is a British surgeon who conducts humanitarian missions in crisis and war zones.

Life

Nott's interest in surgery began while studying medicine in Manchester and Liverpool.

He specialized in vascular surgery and has practiced at Charing Cross , Chelsea and Westminster , St Mary’s and Royal Marsden hospitals in London . As a surgeon, he was an expert in minimally invasive surgery , particularly in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms and arterial bypasses. In 1999 he was the first surgeon in the world to perform a femoropopliteal bypass using the keyhole technique.

At Christmas 1993 he saw pictures of the Bosnian war and made a spontaneous decision to go there. Since then, he has been traveling to crisis areas for several weeks each year for Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross . In 2015 he joined the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and served in Afghanistan. There he learned techniques to stabilize severely injured people quickly and only later to perform long operations on them.

In 2013-14 he visited Aleppo and trained the rebel doctors in trauma surgery so that they can perform operations far beyond their capabilities.

In 2015 he founded the David Nott Foundation and married Eleanor Jupp.

In 2016 he received the Robert Burns Humanitarian Award for his commitment .
