This article is about FC Winterthur in the 2016/17 season . FC Winterthur played in the Challenge League this season , which he finished in 6th place after being in last place in the back round. In the Swiss Cup , the FCW kicked the BSC Young Boys out of the cup as an outsider in the quarter-finals and were eliminated in the subsequent semi-final against FC Basel .

Season course

preparation

Silvio in the dress of Wolfsberger AC

After the rather mediocre last season, a large part of the team was replaced at the beginning of the new season. At the end of last season, various departures were known, in addition to the veteran striker Patrick Bengondo , Ramon Cecchini , Claudio Holenstein , Marco Köfler , Musa Araz and Christian Fassnacht left the club. Other departures that became known in the course of preparation were the second long-time offensive player João Paiva , who turned down a contract on poorer terms, Tunahan Çiçek , who moved to the second highest Turkish league to Boluspor , and the duo Sandro Foschini and Sead Hajrović , the both left the club in the direction of Wohlen . Before training started on June 16, the commitments of the offensive player Romain Dessarzin from Lausanne Sports , the "six" Krešo Ljubičić , former captain of the bankrupt FC Biel , and Nicola Sutter , who came from Thun to Winterthur for a year on loan , were already known. On the second day of training, the full-back Leandro Di Gregorio signed a new contract.

The first test matches in June were played by FCW against FC Rapperswil-Jona (2-2 draw), FC Luzern and SC Cham (each a 4-2 win) and also tested other players extensively in these. Jordi Nsiala (Oberwallis Naters, 1st division), Manuel Sutter from Vaduz and Luka Sliskovic on loan were signed for the offensive . The last commitment on the offensive was the Brazilian striker Silvio, who came from Austria . On the defensive, Daniele Russo from St. Gallen and the returnees Luca Radice , who played for Winterthur from 2006 to 2013, were signed. Also to be mentioned is Genc Krasniqi , who, despite a valid contract, no longer plays a role in coach Sven Christ's plans: He tore a cruciate ligament in a test match with the Stuttgart football team , which meant that a transfer to the club failed. Further test matches in July were against SC Brühl St. Gallen (2-0 win), 1. FC Nürnberg ( 1-5 defeat), YF Juventus Zurich (3-2 win) and FC Tuggen (0-2 Defeat). As the penultimate test match, the FCW also played a friendly against FC United of Manchester on June 18, so the "Red Rebels" played a second time after 2014 on the Schützenwiese. At the end of the preparation phase, the team comprised more than ten new players, and according to his own statement, the coach's transfer requests were fulfilled.

First round

The poor visibility during the fog derby on the Schützenwiese

FC Winterthur started the new season with an away game with an almost completely renewed squad, in the opening game in front of 13,704 spectators in Letzigrund against relegated FC Zurich , only four players from the starting lineup played for the Winterthur team last year. In the first half of the first half of the season, the FCW offered four wins, three defeats and two draws, a performance in the league average and accordingly took 5th place after the 9th round, most recently even unbeaten in five league games in a row. After that, however, things went down: In the remaining nine games, the Winterthur-based company managed to get four points with four draws and thus fell back to 8th place and had to go into the winter break with only five points on the bottom of the table, FC Schaffhausen . Offensive, the FCW was hardly dangerous in the second quarter of the championship, since the last 3-2 win in the 9th round against Geneva, the FCW has not scored more than one goal in a game.

Incidentally, the first half of the season ended with the home derby against FC Zurich, which the spectators of the sold-out Schützenwiese will remember as the “fog derby” because of the thick fog. With regard to this game, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told Blick.ch that the game between Winterthur and Zurich would go under with regard to the Club World Cup in Japan, which was being held at the same time .

After all, the balance sheet looks better in the Swiss Cup : The club from Eulachstadt is in the cup quarter-finals after victories against Yverdon Sports , FC Stade Lausanne-Ouchy and FC Chiasso .

Second half

In preparation for the second half of the season, FCW has already started with its first new player, the Basler U21 international Arxhend Cani , an attacking midfielder. As further reinforcements, the strikers Rafhinha from SC Brühl St. Gallen and Zlatko Hebib , who most recently played for the relegated FC Biel , were committed to the central defense . The test match balance was balanced with 3 wins and 3 losses.

However, the start of the second half of the season failed completely for the FCW, he lost the opening game against the bottom of the table FC Chiasso and against the table third Servette Geneva with 1: 4 each and the lead over the bottom of the table Schaffhausen melted to one point. In response, the club split from coach Sven Christ for sporting reasons, although the club has emphasized. For him, the coaching duo Umberto Romano (previously U18 coach) and Dario Zuffi (U21 coach) took over the leadership of the first team , initially as an interim and later also as a definitive solution . These two had already led the first team on an interim basis during two games before the winter break last season. The team succeeded in the opening game under the new duo with a 2-1 win against FC Wohlen after half-time, but then followed a narrow defeat of the same amount in the opening game of LIPO-Park against FC Schaffhausen . Things went better for the Winterthur team in the Swiss Cup against the second in the Super League, the BSC Young Boys : Winterthur was able to make up a 2-0 deficit in the second half and ultimately defeated the hosts at the Stade de Suisse thanks to a penalty from Matthias Minder in penalty shootout.

Despite the semi-finals, Winterthur had to accept the red lantern after a 0-1 defeat away from FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne . There the remaining FC Winterthur for five rounds, but also showed his subsequent performances against teams in the standings that he does not belong here athletic. Although he lost in the next game against second-placed Neuchâtel Xamax with 0: 1, he was able to wrest a 2: 2 from clear table leaders FC Zurich in Letzigrund in the following game . This game also prompted FCZ coach Uli Forte to state that FCW would not be relegated if he continued to play. Another 1-1 draw against Wil followed before the bottom of the Challenge League table welcomed the lone leader of the Super League, FC Basel , to the cup semi-finals. As expected, the champions from Basel were able to win the game 3-1, but FCB had to shake the victory until the end and, as in the semi-final match five years ago , a controversial penalty decision by referee Sascha Amhof ensured Discussions: When the score was 0-0, he whistled a penalty for FC Basel, although Winterthur captain Patrick Schuler had played the ball first.

After the Cup in the semifinals, a winning streak of four games followed in the championship, with which the FCW was finally able to break away from the bottom of the table. The rest of the championship also ended quietly for the FCW with two wins and three defeats, not least because this was not decided on a sporting basis once again, as FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne did not appeal against a first-instance license refusal and finally relegated in ninth place, the FCW itself finished the championship in 6th place with a seven point lead over the bottom of the table from Wil. The championship against FC Chiasso also ended in a conciliatory manner for the retiring Michel Avanzini and Captain Patrick Schuler , who had been playing for FCW for years , both of whom scored another goal in their last game on the Schützenwiese.

On the season's balance sheet, Der Landbote reported that the gap to the top was getting bigger and bigger. The sporting upheaval last summer did not succeed and too many transfers had failed. One year after Hannes W. Keller resigned, the association still has no new president.
