Antonae is a genus of humpback chirps , a family of round-headed cicadas (Cicadomorpha) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea.

features

The cicadas of this genus are about 6.9 to 10.2 millimeters in size, they are usually yellowish in color, often with black spots or black with yellow spots. The pronotum is divided into a front and a rear part by a constriction. The front part is rounded and often has lateral thorns. The rear part is round and relatively thick at the front. Similar humpback chirps belong e.g. B. to the genera Ilithucia , Parantonae and Lallemandia . The genus Illithucia was temporarily regarded as a synonym of Antonae (e.g. in the catalog of the Membracidae) but is again considered an independent genus.

distribution

The representatives of the genus occur in the Neotropic , in northern South America, Central America and Mexico. Relatively many species, namely ten, are known from Colombia. Only a few years ago a species of the genus from Brazil was described for the first time. Some species occur at relatively high altitudes (3000 to 4000 m), where they are associated with plants of the genus Espeletia . Other species also occur in the rainforests of the lowlands (e.g. Anotonae guttipes ).

Way of life

The adults are usually found individually, sometimes nymphs were found with adults in groups under leaves or on the tips of the plants. The larvae are very well camouflaged in the coat of the plants. The Antonae cicadas live almost exclusively on plants of the Asteraceae and Solanaceae families , where they suckle phloem .

Systematics

The genus contains at least 21 species.
