Carl Stål

Carl Stål (born March 21, 1833 at Karlberg Castle , Stockholm ; † June 13, 1878 in Frösundavik near Stockholm), sometimes also written as Karl Stål , was a Swedish entomologist .

Live and act

Stål was the son of Carl Stål (1803-1884) and his wife Carolina Gustafva (née Palmstedt). His father was a lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Engineers and an information officer at the War Academy. His mother was the daughter of Professor Carl Palmstedt. First he attended the new elementary school in Stockholm from 1847, which he had to leave in 1851 due to health problems. After that he was taught by various private tutors. On May 24, 1853, he enrolled at Uppsala University , where he successfully completed his studies in medicine and philosophy in 1857. He then enrolled at the Carolinian Medicosurgery Institute . Here he took courses in anatomy and physiology with Anders Adolf Retzius . Due to his poor health, he had to drop out of college. He devoted himself to entomology and received his doctorate in 1859 from the University of Jena . In the same year he became assistant to Carl Henrik Boheman in the zoological department of the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm, where he was appointed curator in 1867 and received the title of professor. In the following years he traveled in Sweden and all over Europe and studied the collection of Johann Christian Fabricius in Kiel . In 1869 he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .

Ståls research priorities were the Hemiptera (Hemiptera) and locusts (Orthoptera), of which he numerous taxa in the Journal Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis described and foreign entomological journals. Other works published by Stål are Hemiptera Fabriciana (1868-69) , Enumeratio Hemipterorum (5 volumes, 1870-76) and Observations orthoptérologiques (1875-78).

In 1872 he married Jenny Margareta (nee Wall) with whom he had a daughter.
