Political career

Stoddart was a member of Reading Borough Council from 1954 to 1972 and headed the district administration from 1965 to 1972. From 1970 to 1983 Stoddart was a candidate for the Labor Party MP for the constituency of Swindon. In 1983 he lost the mandate to the conservative Simon Coombs . Stoddart was the ruling Whip from 1975 to 1978 .

In 2002 he was expelled from the Labor faction in the House of Lords after supporting a Socialist Alliance candidate in the 2001 general election. Stoddart justified his support of the Socialist Alliance candidate by saying that he rejected the transfer of the former Conservative MP Shaun Woodward to the Labor Party.
