David de Sousa (musician)

David de Sousa (born May 6, 1880 in Figueira da Foz ; † October 3, 1918 ibid) was a Portuguese cellist , conductor and composer.

Career

Sousa studied at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa cello with Eduardo Wagner and composition with Freitas Gazul . A scholarship from the Portuguese state enabled him to study at the Leipzig Conservatory with Julius Klengel from 1904 .

After returning to his homeland, he made his debut as a conductor at the National Theater in Lisbon in 1913 and was appointed principal conductor of the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra shortly afterwards. From 1916 he taught cello and orchestra. One of the students was the cellist Guilhermina Suggia .

He died in October 1918 at a pneumonia .
