Mercado Municipal Engenheiro Silva (Eng .: Municipal Market Hall Engineer Silva) is a market hall in the Portuguese coastal town of Figueira da Foz .

history

In the course of the rapidly growing city and its port since the middle of the 19th century, the city administration ( Câmara Municipal ) commissioned the engineer Francisco Maria Pereira da Silva with the planning and reorganization of the expanding inner city. A central market hall was part of these plans. The contract for the construction and operation of the market hall was given on May 7, 1890 to Guilherme Mesquita , who handed the concession over to the company Companhia Progresso Figueirense (English: Society of figurative progress), of which he was president. In 1892, on St. John's Day (June 24th), the day of the city festival and the city ​​patron saint S. João ( John the Baptist ), the market hall was opened. As a posthumous honor, she received the name of the engineer Silva. The building company operated the market hall until 1977, and since then it has been under municipal administration.

The building has been listed as Imóvel de Interest Municipal since 2004 .

The building, with its distinctive iron construction, is two-story and square and has a floor area of ​​4800 m². In the interior is the actual market hall with the various stalls, while in the four surrounding wings of the building, open inwards, there are further small shops, and larger restaurants face outwards, and are mostly only accessible from the outside. The market hall has entrances of roughly the same size on three sides: the main entrance on the river side and adorned with azulejo billboards, an eastern entrance on the side of the city park, and a northern entrance to a side street. In the late 1990s, the market hall underwent extensive renovation, in which, however, only the market stalls and the infrastructure were modernized and the building remained otherwise unchanged.

Modernization work has been undertaken again since 2012, after which the upper floors will also be used again. For the transitional period, a temporary market hall was set up in the spacious parking lot next to the city beach Praia da Claridade . The renovation work was completed in June 2013 and the market hall reopened, while the temporary hall on the beach has since been used as an event and exhibition hall.
