De L'Église is a subway station in Montreal . It is located in the Arrondissement of Verdun (Montreal) at the intersection of Rue de l'Église and Rue Wellington. Trains on the green line 1 run here . In 2006, 2,295,037 passengers used the station, which is 40th among the 68 stations on Metro Montreal .

Building

Entrance pavilion

The station designed by the architects Lemay et Leduc was created in the form of a tunnel station . Due to problems in the construction phase (see chapter History), the platforms had to be built on top of each other instead of next to each other and the stairs were narrower than usual. This creates the general impression of confinement. The walls are clad with glazed ceramic tiles arranged in stripes and circles. There are two concrete entrance pavilions that have postmodern features with their beveled angles and the cliffs.

The side platform of the trains traveling south is at a depth of 25.6 meters, that of the trains traveling towards the city is at a depth of 19.8 meters. The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from the end of the station to the beginning of the station, are 563.86 meters to Verdun and 812.30 meters to LaSalle . There are connections to three bus lines and a night bus line of the Société de transport de Montréal .

art

Concrete reliefs by Claude Théberge and Antoine Lamarche adorn the walls and ceilings in the entrance halls and stairwells. They have different strip-shaped patterns at different angles, which creates a rhythmic impression.

history

The station opened on September 3, 1978, together with the Atwater - Angrignon section of the green line. It is named after the Avenue de l'Église, named after the Saint-Paul de Montréal church. The construction of the station was fraught with difficulties. On March 20, 1974, the tunnel ceiling collapsed during blasting work when the unstable rock gave way. A little later, part of the road above also fell into the pit. Gas leaks necessitated the temporary evacuation of the surrounding houses. After the incident, the construction plans had to be changed in order to keep the space requirements as low as possible. Instead of placing the platforms next to each other as originally intended, they had to be placed on top of each other. The opening of the line was delayed by two years.
