De Monn with da long stong - un two Dudwiller Kinner is a work of art on the old market in Dudweiler . As a monument , it is a reminder of the earlier public street lighting with gas lamps . The figure of the lighter and the gas lantern was created by the blacksmith Zoltan Hencze in 1989, and a year later he made the two children's figures.

Historical and literary impetus

In the Dudweiler dialect, Monn with da long stong was the name given to the man who lit the gas lanterns with the help of a long pole at dusk. The Saarland writer Ludwig Harig , who grew up in neighboring Sulzbach , found the expression dark and threatening in his childhood - he and the other children were afraid of these "dark and dangerous people".

When Harig was asked to give a speech on July 1, 1977 on the occasion of the millennium of Dudweiler, he used the Monn with da long stong as a leitmotif . He recounted the history of the place and represented the citizens as people with long poles - starting with the town founder Dudo in the 10th century:

"[...] his long Dudweiler pole was leaning against the door, and he sat there and looked defiantly at Malstatt , where the spiritual orders came from, Dudo, the first 'Monn with de long stong'."

Up to the protest movement against the territorial and administrative reform in 1974 :

"They founded a citizens' committee, attached banners to their long Dudweiler poles and joined forces on November 28, 1973 for a protest march that led them to the stairs of the state parliament."

Idea template and artwork

The then Dudweiler District Mayor Hermann Schon gave the impetus for the monument, as well as the template, which was implemented by Zoltan Hencze († April 2000) in terms of craftsmanship and art. The material used was financed through donations from the citizens of Dudweiler as well as from business people and companies.

An inscription makes it clear what the monument symbolically stands for:

  • Dudo , the namesake of Dudweiler,
  • the Dudwiller dialect (Dudweiler dialect),
  • the Dudwiller Grammetschler (the typically grumpy Dudweiler citizen) and
  • the Dudwiller Londermonn (the lantern lighter from 1902 to 1960).

In a judgment of March 2, 1999, the Saarbrücken regional court clarified that the city of Saarbrücken is the owner of the work of art.
