Location of the windmill in Aruba

De Oude Molen (also: De Olde Molen ; German: Die Alte Mühle ) is the only windmill on the island of Aruba . This Aruba landmark is located in the Palm Beach district in North .

history

This typical Dutch windmill was built in Friesland (Netherlands) in 1804. The windmill was bought by a private merchant, dismantled and shipped to Aruba. As soon as the parts arrived, the mill was reassembled true to the original. This project was officially recognized by the island administration as the first privately funded tourism initiative on the island. In March 1962 a restaurant was opened in the lower part of the mill.

In the 1970s, the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) featured the Old Dutch Windmill as the title motif in a One Happy Island advertising campaign . The mill became the island's landmark.
