Decarboxylases are enzymes that catalyze the splitting off of a carboxy group (-COOH) from organic acids . In the degradation process, CO 2 is an end product.
For example, a decarboxylase is very often required to break down α-keto acids (e.g. pyruvic acid with pyruvate dehydrogenase or pyruvate decarboxylase ). Thiamine pyrophosphate (diphosphoric acid ester of vitamin B1 ) is found in many decarboxylases as a coenzyme and is bound in these as a prosthetic group .
In contrast, carboxylases are enzymes that build carbon dioxide into their substrate .
