The deck officer (DO) is a section leader for the nautical service on board a warship of the German Navy . He is subordinate to the main section head of main section 100 ( nautical engineering ), the navigational officer and under disciplinary law to the first officer of the ship.

According to the strength and equipment certificate (StAN), officers with the rank of lieutenant at sea or first lieutenant at sea of the troop service are usually provided for filling the post . The post is seldom taken over by an officer of the military technical service . The deck officer also regularly takes on tasks as an officer on watch at sea and in port, as well as boarding officer of the ship.

Subordinate to him are one or two deck masters as well as several NCOs and crews .
