history

The Deep South Jamboree began around 1953 when its station was founded and was broadcast live from Alabama by the then 50,000-watt radio station WBAM. Shorty Sullivan performed the show along with his Green Valley Boys , who were the show's house band.

The guests and members of the show consisted mostly of local and regional musicians such as Lonnie Allen, Wayne Cobb, Curly Culpepper, Ray Howard and others. Jack Turner , then under contract with RCA Victor and best known for his version of the R&B classic Hound Dog , joined the ensemble in 1954. At the same time, Roy Duke was also regularly heard in the Jamboree. Duke later moved to Nashville where he worked at Decca Records . Judy Jenkins was also on the show and had previously moved around with Roy Acuff's show.
