Hugo I of Jaffa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo von Le Puiset , called Hugotin , ( French : Hugues du Puiset ; † after 1118) was as Hugo II Lord of Le Puiset and Vice-Count of Chartres , and as Hugo I Count of Jaffa . He was a younger son of Hugo I of Le Puiset and Alix of Montlhéry .

Hugo's older brother, Evrard III. von Le Puiset , joined the first crusade in 1097 , on which he also died. During the absence of his brother and the period of immaturity of his nephew, Hugo III. von Le Puiset , Hugo II took over the management of the family property.

During this time he had married Mabille von Roucy († after 1122), daughter of Count Ebles II von Roucy from the House of Montdidier . She was a granddaughter of Robert Guiskard on her mother's side and was thus related to the Norman ruling house of Hauteville in southern Italy. His maternal cousins Baldwin von Bourcq and Joscelin von Courtenay had risen to the rank of King of Jerusalem and Count of Edessa , respectively , in the Holy Land .

In 1106 another cousin of Hugo, the crusade leader Bohemond of Taranto , appeared in France to recruit knights for the fight against the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos . Hugo joined him and moved to Apulia with his family . In 1107 he fought for Bohemond in Epirus against Byzantium, against which they were however defeated. After the peace was sealed in the Treaty of Devol in 1108 , Hugo traveled alone to the holy land, where he was first mentioned as a witness in a document from King Baldwin I , dated September 28, 1110.

Hugo was probably made Count of Jaffa by King Baldwin II, but the date of the enfeoff is unknown. William of Tire noted the act for the year 1118, but incorrectly in connection with Hugo's arrival in Palestine. Since Hugo was definitely in the country as early as 1110, only one point in time between these years can be assumed. Hugo's death date is unknown, but it should not have been long after 1118.

His widow traveled to the Holy Land after his death and married Albert von Namur , who administered the county of Jaffa until 1123 for Hugo's son Hugo II , who was still underage .
