Ebles II (Roucy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ebles II († May 1103 ) was Count of Roucy and Lord of Ramerupt from 1063 to 1103.

He was the son of Hilduins IV, Count of Montdidier , Lord of Ramerupt and his wife, Countess Adelaide of Roucy, and inherited the County of Roucy and the lordship of Ramerupt when his father died.

Life

Around 1073 Ebles led a large army, which according to Suger von Saint-Denis was worthy of a king, to Spain to fight the Moors . Pope Alexander II and the abbot Hugo von Cluny had already promoted this campaign since the Aragonese king Sancho Ramírez , after the reconquest of Barbastro by the Moors in 1065, had approached Rome politically and religiously . All of Eble's conquests were to be made in favor of St. Peters , and he was assured of full absolution for this campaign, which is why this military engagement can be viewed as an anticipation of the crusades . Ebel's sister, Felicia , had been married to the King of Aragón since around 1070, whom he and his nephew Rotrou III. von Perche supported his cousin Sancho IV of Navarre instead of going against the Moors.

Then Ebles moved to Lower Italy where he supported the Norman ruler Robert Guiscard in his fight against the Byzantine Empire under Alexios I. Komnenos . Around 1082 he married Guiscard's daughter Sibylle.

Back in France , Ebles and his son Guiscard led several feuds against their neighbors, especially against the Archbishops of Reims, whose lands they devastated. It was only after a military intervention by Crown Prince Ludwig (VI) in 1102 that Ebles submitted and ended his raids.

Marriage and offspring

Ebles II of Roucy had been married to Sibylle de Hauteville, a daughter of Robert Guiscard and the Sikelgaita of Salerno , from around 1082 . With her he had five sons and three daughters:
