Dehistan is a former city in western Turkmenistan that played an important role in the region from the 10th century AD to the 14th century. Today the ruins of the city belong to the Balkan welaýaty province .

history

The city benefited from its location on an important trade route between Gorgan in what is now Iran and Khorezmia . The most famous buildings in the city come from the Choresmiers , for example a minaret built in 1004/1005 and another minaret that was built 200 years later. The city had an area of ​​about 200 hectares and was enclosed by two walls. The city was abandoned in the 15th century.

World heritage

Since 1998 Dehistan has been on Turkmenistan's tentative list as a candidate for recognition as a World Heritage Site .
