A scroll saw (French découper = cut out, cut up) is the mechanized version of the fretsaw .

It is used for fine cutting in wood , metal and plastic processing . Either a commercially available fretsaw blade or special scroll saw blades, the size of which is roughly the same as a fretsaw blade, serve as the saw blade . A special adapter is sometimes necessary to use the fretsaw blades without a locking pin. Depending on the version, the saw offers devices for removing the sawdust produced by a blower and / or a vacuum cleaner to be flange-mounted , setting options for stroke length and frequency, a saw table with adjustable inclination for miter cuts or bevels, and lighting.

Scroll saws are used, for example, in the woodworking trade to saw veneers for inlays or to work the receiving slots for steel strip lines in multilayer wood. These steel strips are required during thermoforming in order to punch out foil parts. In the industrial production of steel strips, this type of wood slot production has largely been replaced by laser cutting . In the hobby area, the do-it-yourselfer uses them for fretwork or other fine sawing work.

Working with the scroll saw is a popular hobby, especially in the USA . There are regular exhibitions or “Scroll Saw Picnics” where the hobby craftsmen exchange ideas and present their work. The range of techniques is large: fretwork, inlays, puzzles or movable toys are produced.

In Germany the scroll saw is mainly used in model making or for the production of candle arches or house and garden decoration. It is less common as a woodworking machine for hobbyists.
