Delgatie Castle is a castle near the town of Turriff in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire .

history

A castle has existed on the site of Delgatie Castle since 1030, although the oldest parts of the current castle date from between 1570 and 1579. Additional parts of the building and a chapel were added in 1743.

The castle was taken from the disgraced Henry de Beaumont , the Earl of Buchan in 1314, after the Battle of Bannockburn , and given to the Hay clan , from which the Earls of Erroll later emerged. Maria Stuart was a guest at the castle in 1562 after the Battle of Corrichie .

architecture

Delgatie Castle

The castle consists of a donjon , an annexed house and two wings that were added later. Noteworthy details are a very wide stepped staircase and painted ceilings from the 16th century in some rooms. In many places you can see the family coat of arms of the Hays with three cattle yokes, which reminds us that a farmer and his two sons fought off a Danish attack on Cruden Bay .

Historic Scotland has listed Delgatie Castle as a Category A Historic Building.

ghost

Like many castles, Delgatie Castle is said to be haunted. A number of reports of a ghost-like, red-haired figure, presumably a certain Alexander Hay , come from soldiers who were stationed there during World War II . The castle information boards, mostly by Captain Hay , who had the castle restored in the 1950s, mention that the ghost was first seen when a walled body was found in a priest's hole .

today

Today the castle and its gardens belong to the Delgatie Castle Trust . The castle, the property and a café are open to the public in the summer months. Suites in the castle and a number of farmhouses on the property are available for rent. There are popular fishing grounds along the river that flows through the site.
