The Democracia Popular (DP) (German: People's Democracy ) (actually: Democracia Popular-Unión Demócrata Cristiana (DP-UDC)) , today: Unión Demócrata Cristiana (UDC) (German: Christian Democratic Union ) is a moderately left, Christian Democratic party in Ecuador , which was formally founded in 1979 as Democracia Popular . Since 1964 there was a predecessor organization Democracia Popular Cristiana with little political relevance. Its current president is Diego Ordóñez .

At the time of its founding, the DP was already providing Osvaldo Hurtado , Vice-President of Jaime Roldó's government , who was to take over the government after his death. It was always represented by a few members in parliament without being able to form majorities. The presidential candidacies of Julio César Trujillo in 1984, Jamil Mahuad in 1988, Vladimiro Álvarez in 1992 and Rodrigo Paz in 1996 were unsuccessful. It was not until 1998 that she appointed Jamil Mahuad as president again - with the support of the more conservative Partido Social Cristiano . Until then she ruled the city of Quito for 12 years -1992 to 1998 with Mahuad as mayor and for 8 years the city of Cuenca . It has been significantly weakened since Mahuad stepped down in 2000. In 2006 the DP changed its name to Unión Demócrata Cristiana . In the elections in the same year it still had 5 members in the National Congress , in the elections to the Constituent Assembly in 2007 not a single one. The UDC was also unable to win a seat in the 2009 elections to the National Assembly .

The UDC has an active youth organization, the Juventud Demócrata Cristiana (JDC) .
