Democratic Progressive Party (Malawi)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a political party in Malawi . The party was founded by Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika in February 2005 after he left the United Democratic Front (UDF). Many politicians from other parties also joined the DPP.

In May 2009 the chairman of the DPP, Bingu wa Mutharika, was re-elected President. Of the 193 parliamentary seats, 114 went to the DPP. The expulsion of Vice President Joyce Banda in 2010 had serious consequences for the party . After the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika on April 5, 2012, leading members of the party tried to prevent Joyce Banda from becoming constitutionally president. The attempt failed, however, so that the DPP had to hand over power to Joyce Banda and her new People's Party (PP).

In the presidential elections in May 2014, Peter Mutharika , the brother of Bingu wa Mutharika, ran as the DPP's presidential candidate and won with 36.4% of the vote. In the simultaneous parliamentary elections, the DPP received 50 out of 140 seats and was therefore dependent on the support of MPs from other parties. In the elections in 2019 Peter Mutharika defended his position. The DPP won 62 seats out of 193 seats in the National Assembly.
