Arthur Peter Mutharika (* 1940 in Chisoka , Thyolo , Nyasaland ) is a Malawian politician of the Democratic Progressive Party and was President of Malawi from May 31, 2014 to June 28, 2020.

Life

His brother was the former president of Malawi Bingu wa Mutharika . Mutharika studied at the University of London and Yale University . From May 2009 to March 2014 Mutharika was a member of the National Assembly of Malawi. From September 8, 2011 to April 26, 2012, Mutharika was the successor of Etta Banda as Foreign Minister. Mutharika has been President of Malawi since May 2014, succeeding Joyce Banda . In the 2019 presidential election , he was re-elected with around 39% of the vote. However, the Constitutional Court declared the result of the election invalid due to serious irregularities and ordered a new vote within 150 days.

Mutharika is also running for the re- election on June 23, 2020 . Mutharika lost this to his rival Lazarus Chakwera , who took over the office of president on June 28, 2020.

Peter Mutharika is married and has three children.
