Democratic Socialist Party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Democratic Socialist Party ( Irish An Páirtí Sóisialach Daonlathach ) was a small social democratic party in the Republic of Ireland from 1972 to 1990 . The party was founded in 1972 by Jim Kemmy , an Irish politician and member of the House of Commons, after he left the Labor Party that year.

The party stood to the left of the Labor Party, was a bitter opponent of Irish nationalist positions on Northern Ireland and was oriented towards secularism . The party supported the legalization of contraception, divorce and abortion.

Apart from that of Kemmy in Limerick , the party could never win a seat in the Irish House of Commons and mostly ran only in that constituency and in one in Dublin . Although the political positions attracted many members of communist organizations, the party never had a large membership. In 1990 the party dissolved by merging with the Labor Party. Many of its members joined the newly formed Democratic Left party in 1992 .
