Democratic and Social Movement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Democratic and Social Movement ( Arabic حركة ديمقراطية واجتماعية, French Mouvement Démocratique et Social , abbreviation "MDS") is a left-wing party in Algeria . It was founded in 1966 as the Party of the Socialist Avant- garde ( Parti de l'Avant-Garde Socialiste ) and led by El Hachemi Chérif .

history

The Socialist Avant-garde Party was the successor to the Algerian Communist Party , which was banned shortly after Algeria gained independence. Under the one-party rule of the National Liberation Front (FLN), the vanguard party was also not recognized.

The party was only approved in 1989 and officially re-established as Ettehadi in 1993 . A group that wanted to keep the party's communist legacy left the Ettehadi and founded the Algerian Party for Democracy and Socialism . Finally, in 1999, the Ettehadi itself got its current name.

In the parliamentary elections on May 17, 2007 , the Democratic and Social Movement received only 0.89% of the vote and won a seat in the National People's Assembly .
