from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Demon Attack is a video game released in 1982 by the US company Imagic for the Atari 2600 . The game was very successful and was one of the most successful video games for home game consoles at the time. Demon Attack was programmed by Rob Fulop .

history

The official story of the game Demon Attack is about the fact that the player is with his ship on the ice planet Krybor. Groups of demon ships besiege the planet and attack the player. The game idea of Demon Attack is simple: The player uses his laser weapons to destroy the groups of Demons so that the player himself survives. In many parts of the game Demon Attack resembles the usual shooters of the time, but there are some quirks of the game that make it stand out from the crowd. This includes in particular the graphic display, which was very advanced for the Atari 2600 at the time.

background

Demon Attack was similar to the previously released video game Phoenix . That led to a lawsuit between Imagic and Atari , who held the rights to the game Phoenix. Atari lost that legal battle, which resulted in Demon Attack becoming Imagic's only truly successful game. In addition to the version for the Atari 2600, Imagic also produced versions of the game for Intellivision and the Philips G7000 game console.

The game was programmed to end after the 84th wave of attacks, as programmer Rob Fulop didn't think players would get that far. Two days after the program was launched, a boy was able to overcome all 84 waves of attack. After the first production line of the cartridges was sold, Fulop changed a line of the program code so that the game didn't end, but it didn't get any more difficult after the 84th wave of attacks.
