Monument to Pierre and Ernest Michaux in Bar-le-Duc

The monument to Pierre and Ernest Michaux in Bar-le-Duc , a French town in the Meuse department in Lorraine , was erected in 1894 after a public appeal for donations by the sports magazine Le Vélo .

The memorial commemorates Pierre Michaux (1813-1883) and his son Ernest, both citizens of Bar-le-Duc, who invented the velocipede (high- speed bicycle with pedals).

The monument stands on the site of a former fountain from 1756, which is why it is framed by a niche with a scallop shell . On the stone with the inscription there is a putto with a velocipede. The work was created by the artist Édouard Houssin (1847–1919).
