monument

The memorial to the victims of the 1966 Tashkent earthquake was erected in 1976 to mark the 10th anniversary of the disaster. It is the work of the sculptor Dmitri Borisovich Ryabichev and the architect Sobir Odilov . The monument is centrally located near the Museum of the Olympic History of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent Concert Hall and the German Embassy, north of the central Mustaqillik Maydoni square . The monument consists of several elements: the central statue is a family made up of a man, woman and a baby, in front of which a crack runs through the earth. The man stands protectively in front of the woman and child in order to avert harm from them. Next to it is a granite block split in half . A clock is depicted on it that shows the time 17:22 when the earthquake started and many clocks in the city stopped. The date of the disaster is also recorded. In the background there are several bronze reliefs on 14 steles , on which scenes from the reconstruction of the city can be seen. The reliefs also honor the help of the other Soviet republics after the disaster. When the monument was erected in 1976, the Museum of Friendship of the People of the Soviet Union was built near the complex, matching the illustrations on the bronze plaques.

Today the square is popular with walkers due to its central location. It is a tradition that newlyweds lay flowers at the memorial.
