Monument to the Revolution (Kozara)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monument to the Revolution ( Serbo-Croatian Spomenik Revoluciji ) is a monument by the Yugoslav sculptor Dušan Džamonja , which was erected from 1971 to 1972 in the Kozara National Park in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina . It commemorates the fallen partisans of the Kozara Offensive ( called Operation West Bosnia by the Axis Powers ) in April 1942. After the partisans had won a number of areas, the Axis Powers mobilized thousands of soldiers, including 15,000 from the Wehrmacht and 22,000 soldiers of the Ustasha and other soldiers of fascist organizations. In contrast, there were 3,000 partisans with around 60,000 untrained supporters from the civilian population. Only 900 partisans survived the fight and at least 10,000 civilians lost their lives. It was one of the partisans' most tragic defeats.

Construction of the monument began with the laying of the foundation stone on August 2, 1971 by the Bosnian President Hamdija Pozderac . The monument was erected by the Tehnika company . It was financed by donations from 400,000 individuals and 1,000 organizations. The monument was completed on July 27, 1972, but it was not officially opened by Josip Tito until September 10, 1972 .

The monument consists of a reinforced concrete column about 33 meters high, which actually consists of 20 individual vertical concrete pillars, which are clad in places with stainless steel plates. It is located near the top of Mrakovica Mountain . Džamonja was able to assert itself with his design against various competitors, including Slavko Tihec , Vojislav Vasiljević , Marija Ujević , Bogoljub Teofanović , Nebojša Delja and Šime Vulas .

Behind the monument there is a memorial wall that is equipped with various bronze plaques. They list 9,921 names of fallen partisans.

The monument was depicted on the Yugoslav 500,000 and 2,000,000 dinar notes.

Mrakovica Museum

A small museum called the Mrakovica Museum ( Serbo-Croatian Memorijalni muzej na Mrakovici ) is located south of the summit and opened on July 4, 1973. It was also designed by Dušan Džamonja. The museum contains various exhibits, photos and information about the Kozara offensive. There is a tank in front of the museum.

The museum also has a sculptural relief, also by Džamonja, from 1973. He had already designed a similar work for the memorial for the victims of the concentration camp in Jasenovac .
