Like most solitaires, a birthday is a card game for one person. A simple rummy sheet with 52 cards is used as playing cards.

Before shuffling, four cards are taken from the hand that result in a four-digit number as a target. This number can be a year of birth, for example, but cannot contain a zero. Four payment cards of different color are selected , each of which shows one eye more than the target number requires. If, as in the example on the right, 1956 is to be reached, cards with the values 2, 10, 6 and 7 are required. These cards form the starting display.

After the cards have been laid out, the remaining 48 cards are shuffled and then taken face down as a talon . One card after the other is then taken from this pile and either placed face up on a discard pile or, if it is one number higher than one of the cards on display and matching the color (increasing sequence), attached to it. If an open card from the discard pile fits after it has been created, it can also be discarded. When the talon has been processed, the discard pile is picked up again, unmixed, and taken off again, this happens four times in total. When all cards have been placed in the display after four rounds, the solitaire has risen and won.
