Der Graf von Gleichen is a musical based on the legend of the Count zu Gleichen in Thuringia by Peter Frank (music) and Dirk Schattner (direction). The musical was premiered on May 27, 2006 at Gut Ringhofen in Mühlberg with a view of the Three Equals .

action

Following the national call of the emperor , Ernst, Count von Gleichen, sets out to go on the crusade . He leaves his wife Regina and two children behind at Gleichen Castle . The count and his squire, Kurt, are captured and spend six years as slaves at the court of Sultan Kamaluddin of Cairo.

Finally, Selina, the sultan's young daughter, becomes aware of Ernst. She is supposed to be married to a wealthy Arab nobleman, but would much rather flee with the count. Count Ernst, for his part, is disturbed because Kurt interprets some dreams that his wife died back home. He agrees to Selina's escape plans. Selina, Ernst, Kurt and his lover Jasira set off for Europe. When Count Ernst arrived in Venice , he found out that his wife was still alive. Selina, however, sees no problem in this, as it is common in the Orient for a man to take several women. In Rome the Pope personally blesses their association.

Countess Regina waited for her husband in the Gleichen Castle all these years. Neither the whispering of the scheming court chaplain Malachus nor the offers of various counts to marry her could dissuade her from believing that her husband would return.

When she receives a letter in which the count announces his return with Selina, she is devastated. But joy at the return of the beloved wins out. Regina decides to take on Selina, who saved Ernst's life, as a sister.
