Jan Opoczynski, writer of German texts, composer and singer, has also been there since 2003 and is now the head of the band. In 2007, actor Alexander Scheer joined the band as a permanent member. He plays guitar in the international competition and appears as the second front man.

After The International Competition completed its first club engagements in the year it was founded and went on tour in Russia in 2005, the project was continued as an independent band.

Debut album

In summer 2009 the musicians rented a former LPG culture house near Bad Freienwalde (Oder) and made recordings there for their debut album Kein Schnaps für Sascha , which was released on February 23, 2012 on the Austrian label office4music .

Fragments of the song Komm wir fahrn zur Endstation contained therein were already used by Alexander Scheer in 2008 for his role as a street musician in the television film Der Heckenschütze (director: Manfred Stelzer , 2008). The song also occupied in 2011 at the Summer Song Competition of rbb telecast zibb second place.

criticism

The debut album was a hit with the public. a. Associated with Ostrock, but welcomed. So writes the Musikexpress :

“Hard to believe, but: The honor of GDR Pop has been a great success. [...] Recorded in proper style in the dance hall of a former LPG cultural center, the street music-starred septet [...] shakes the loose, fluffy German rock hits with slightly ironic lyrics out of the sleeves of the pajamas in which they are depicted on the cover are. Not as clumsy as the Puhdys, not as dogged as City, not as pretentious as Silly, but as cheeky as Pankow, virtuoso as Karussell and above all as poetic and yet elegant as Manfred Krug. [...] "

repertoire

In addition to the German-language compositions by Jan Opoczynski, the repertoire also includes pieces made famous by singers such as Johnny Cash , Adriano Celentano and Carl Perkins .

Trivia

One of the founding members was Sebastian Maschat, who played tea box bass in the street music line-up . Since 2006 he has been the drummer with The Whitest Boy Alive , with whom The International Competition initially shared the studio.

The tape machine (Studer A80), which was used to record the debut album in 2009, previously belonged to Eric Clapton's mobile studio .

The International Competition plays a wedding band in the TV film My Foreign Daughter (directed by Manfred Stelzer , 2007, with Götz George , among others ).

A line of text from the Jan Opoczynski song Bruder Jakob (" He stands in front of the mirror / looks almost like Elvis / the wardrobe spits out a leather jacket ") refers to Opoczynski's supporting role in the 1991 DEFA film The Girl from the Elevator (Director: Herrmann Zschoche ), in which he appears with Elvistolle and leather jacket.

The current line-up of the band consists only of native Berliners.
