The Llano in Flames (Spanish El Llano en llamas ) is a collection of short stories by the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo . It was first published continuously in Spanish in 1953 and appeared in German in 1964 in a translation by Mariana Frenk-Westheim . The two short stories The Day It Shook and The Legacy of Matilde Arcángel were not included in the first editions of the collection and were added later. The story Paso del Norte was also left out in some editions. Various stories in the volume had previously appeared in the magazines América and Pan , where they were reprinted together with photographs by the author .
