The Patriot (moral weekly)
The Patriot was the most important German moral weekly at the beginning of the 18th century. She was an important mouthpiece for the beginning of the Enlightenment . It appeared weekly in Hamburg from 1724 to 1726; by 1765 there were four new editions, and they were translated into Dutch and French.
The journal type Moralische Wochenschrift was modeled after English models, including those published and written very successfully by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele , from three times a week to daily periodicals ( The Tatler , The Guardian and The Spectator ).
The Patriot had its own editorial team , which did not publish translations of the Moral Weekly Papers from England, but selected and edited the topics itself. The Patriot advocated that it was not only important to be a good Christian, but that it was also necessary to get involved in society. In addition to political issues, the family, coexistence in society and at court and criticism of this were also included.
In the first year the circulation of the Patriot increased from 400 to over 5,500 copies. With the patriot , the genre of weekly magazines experienced its breakthrough in Germany. Many other titles were founded due to the success of the Patriot , some with very similar titles ( Austrian Patriot, Patriot in Bavaria etc.). Besides the Patriot , there were probably over 500 other Moral Weekly Papers in Germany.
Many German scholars and writers were authors of the Patriot , but all published their articles under pseudonyms . Their anonymity was not revealed until three years after the last edition of the Patriot .
