The Pied Piper (Zuckmayer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pied Piper is a play in the form of a fable by Carl Zuckmayer from 1974.

The piece refers to the Hamelin saga from the 13th century , but has been transferred to the present. It is Zuckmayer's last play. In a city divided into rich and poor districts, conflicts simmer between the saturated bourgeoisie and the oppressed proletariat. The boys on both sides, the discerning who should be the future of the city, turn away from their fathers and turn to the vagabond Bunting , who wants to lead them to “a true freedom”. With the piece, Zuckmayer expressed that, in his opinion, real freedom, independence and the possibility of "independent living" were more a pipe dream than reality, even in the late 20th century.

The first performance of the piece, written in 1974, took place on February 22, 1975 in Zurich .

There is an opera of the same name by Friedrich Cerha , based on Zuckmayer's text.
