content

The sons of two carpenters are always together and stay that way even as adults, with the brave soldier and the timid carpenter. Wherever the carpenter finds work, the soldier stays as a servant, but is quickly dismissed because of his laziness, whereupon the carpenter goes with him. So also in a big city. Then they come to a forest, and because the brave one is not afraid, the other goes too. They get lost, then they see a light and come to a bright castle with a black dog and a red swan on the pond. It's deserted, but a gray cat is cooking in the kitchen and there is food in one room. Then they go to sleep, the timid man finds a crucifix and two prayer books.

In the morning they both get a push. They leave breakfast and go into the cellar, there is an old woman in front of the first, a fourteen-year-old in front of the second and a twelve-year-old in front of the third, who on the way back ask whether the swan, the dog and the cat are still there, then they couldn't come up with me. In a chamber you will find a bow and arrow, a sword and a pair of tongs, above which it says that you can use them to kill the swan, the dog and the cat. You can also find armor, but they are too heavy. A pigeon comes through a barred window and becomes a youth. The three of them kill the three animals, then the old woman storming up with her children. There is a murmur. They bury the bodies. When they return, the castle that petrified the witch is released. The three animals had been other wizards whom they could only turn into animals.

origin

Grimm's note noted from the Münsterland (probably the von Haxthausen family ). Some of it is good, but the overall composition has obviously suffered. Jacob Grimm wrote to his brother after it appeared that he wished it away, probably because of the confused plot. The magic fairy tale is the oldest known version, which is comparable to the fairy tale type ATU 410 * The Petrified Kingdom .
