text
Elevations are in italics in the first stanza. The modernized spelling follows Frühwald.
- It sang before lan gen Jah ren
- Probably also the After ti gall ,
- That was probably sweet SSSR sound ,
- Since we at sam men wa ren.
- I sing and I can't cry
- And spin so alone
- The thread clear and pure,
- As long as the moon will shine.
- Since we were together
- The nightingale sang
- Now their sound reminds me
- That you drove from me.
- As often as the moon shines
- I remember you alone
- My heart is clear and pure
- God wants to unite us.
- Since you drove from me
- The nightingale always sings,
- I think by their sound
- How we were together
- God wants to unite us
- Here I spin so alone
- The moon shines clear and pure
- I sing and I want to cry!
interpretation
The poem is about a lonely spinner who longs for lost love. It is a typical poem from the Romantic era. This work by Brentano was discussed by Frühwald, for example. It can be recorded effortlessly. In the song, a lament for the dead lover, the spinning wheel becomes the wheel of time. The longing for its renewal speaks from the lament for the lost paradise. The spinner translates the nightingale song with her song and thus recreates the paradise from which man has been driven . In addition, Brentano treats his big topic - the futile search for harmony. Brentano strike the tone of the folk song and artistically follow the path of the nightingale song by Grimmelshausen .
The last stanza breaks with the image of the spun thread that is held out in the first five stanzas and signals: The spinning wheel is standing still.
