The state hemorrhoidarius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The state haemorrhoidarius was the title character of a satirical sequel story that Franz von Pocci published in the mid-19th century in the Fliegende Blätter .

action

First picture of the first story: The civil servant at the desk.

The main content of the Staatshaemorrhoidarius is the satirical representation of civil servants and bureaucracy. A public servant qualifies due imaginary or actual physical symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract to Staatshämorrhoidarius .

In the aftermath of the revolutions of 1848/1849 he was imprisoned twice because he was first found too reactionary and then too liberal. Later, however, he is released again and resumes his job as a state hemorrhoidarius . To do this, he has an assistant at his side.

Publication and background

In 1845, in issue 8 of the first year of the Fliegende Blätter , the first story with the state hemorrhoid was published in a series of nine pictures. In issue 21 (also 1845) the second series with eight pictures appeared. In the following years, more individual images and stories were published in loose succession, the content of which followed on from the previous stories and images. The last series of pictures in the Fliegende Blätter appeared in 1863. At times, no pictures or stories were published, for example between 1848 and 1853.

A revised version of the book of the Staatshaemorrhoidarius was published in 1857. Reprints of this book were published in 1927, 1975, 1979, and 2007.

For Eckart Sackmann , Der Staatshämorrhoidarius is a "sharp posse against civil servants". According to Tobias Timm , Pocci's drawings are "definitely reminiscent of today's drawings by Robert Crumb ".
