The squid

The octopus was a political satirical magazine in folio format that has appeared fortnightly in Saarland since spring 1948 . This paper, which at the time could be classified as reactionary, was published by the conservative Saarbrücker Zeitung , which was then under French management . The editors knew how to show the Saarlanders a little of their freedoms between official toleration and disapproval in the democratic new beginning.

The sheet was twelve pages thick and at its best had a circulation of 30,000 copies.

Founded by the young Saarbrücken-based editor-in-chief Bruno Koppelkamm , Peter Frantzen , who retired after a few issues, and Bob Strauch , later expanded by the congenial draftsman Roland Stigulinszky and a few other copywriters and draftsmen, the creators knew how to hit the right note of the times . While the first issues were being torn out of their hands, interest soon ebbed. It was banned for the first time just a year after its appearance. A few more bans followed. The reason was a caricature for the Bexbach building exhibition: "I'll bring the Gippskepp for the decorations ..." it said in Saarland in the caption. This meant in particular Prime Minister Johannes Hoffmann (politician, 1890) , who was demoted to vicarious agent in this way .

The makers, who were as divided as the rest of the population on the question of the Saar Statute , separated at the end of 1953 because of increasingly restrictive domestic policy, but also for economic reasons.
