George Woltman

George Woltman (born November 10, 1957 ) is the founder (1996) of the large Internet Mersenne prime number search (GIMPS), a project for distributed computing to search for Mersenne prime numbers using his Prime95 or MPrime software .

He received his Masters Degree in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1978 . He then worked on operating systems at Data General until 1981 and on the development of the ALLY programming language for a small software company in Cary, North Carolina, until 1986 . In 1986 he co-founded Q + E Software, which developed database tools for Microsoft Windows. Since 1994 he has lived in Orlando, Florida , where he works for Just for Fun Software .

His mathematical libraries created for the GIMPS project offer the fastest known algorithms for the multiplication of large numbers and are also used by other programs for distributed computing.
