The dream ( French: Le rêve ) is a novel by Émile Zola and also the 16th volume of the twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle . It first appeared in October 1888 by Charpentier. The action takes place in the period 1860 to 1869. Angélique is the daughter of Sidonie Rougon, with whom she appears for the first time in The Conquest of Plassans . In Doctor Pascal , Zola describes Angélique as completely different in character from her parents.

The focus of the plot is the orphan Angélique Marie. She was born in 1851 and adopted by the childless Hubert couple. Like some of her ancestors, she is religious, loves the legends of saints and dreams of marrying Jesus in heaven. Angélique falls in love with Félicien d'Hautecœur, who returns her affection. But Félicien is supposed to take on an ecclesiastical office that forces him to be celibate , and Angélique is not befitting. Félicien's father is a bishop and wants to end the love affair. Angélique falls seriously ill from grief. When he gives her the last unction, the bishop has mercy and agrees to the marriage of Angélique and Félicien. When Félicien kisses his bride for the first time after the wedding on the steps of the church, she dies in his arms.
