The German Florus 1647

The German Florus is the abbreviation for a "bestseller" from the 17th century, in which Eberhard Wassenberg (born November 9, 1610 in Emmerich ; † after 1668 in an unknown location) depicts political events and personalities from the first half of the 17th century. The concept of the Thirty Years' War did not exist at that time, Wassenberg speaks of the Bohemian War, Austrian War, Moravian War, Palatinate War, Transylvanian War, Manßfeld and Braunschweig War, Dennemarckian War, Magdeburg War, Dutch War, Italian or Welschen War and Swedish War. Other events described are the Silesian Treaty, the Leipzig Confederation , the coronations and the wedding of Ferdinand III. and the death of Ferdinand II.

The book was first published in Latin in 1635 under the title FLORUS GERMANICUS, sive EBERHARDI WASSENBERGII Embricensis, COMMENTARIORUM DE BELLO, Inter invictissimos Imperatores FERDINANDOS II. & III. Et eorum hostes, Præsertim FREDERICUM PALATINUM, GABRIELEM BETHLENUM, ET DANIÆ, SUECIÆ, FRANCIÆ REGES GESTO, LIBER SINGULARIS, a German-language edition from 1647 bears the title Der Ernewerder Teutsche, FLORVS WASSENBERG, with their addition in front of correction Indented, unequal˜ hystories: improved; the truth restituted, and bit Ano 1647. continued. Franckfurt. Bey Anthony Humme˜ . With the dimensions 8.5 × 14 × 4.5 cm it was a "paperback".

The content of the book is not a historical source of its own, as the sources were exclusively printed works. The book has a special meaning because it served Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen as a timeline and inspiration for his novels Der Abentheuerliche Simplicissimus Teutsch (1668), Trutz Simplex (1669) and Der seltzame Springinsfeld (1670). The suggestion was so great that it was possible to speak of plagiarism in numerous sentences, even larger passages and in Springinsfeld in an entire chapter .

The work initially consisted of 4 books (sections) totaling 420 pages and later received an addendum and a new addendum , after which it had more than 700 pages.
