The dreaming dolphin (original title: The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer ) is a 1995 novel by the Peruvian writer Sergio Bambaren . The self- published work by Bambaren was his first book. The German edition was published in 1998 by Piper-Verlag .

The young dolphin Daniel Alexander likes to play with the waves because it gives him a sense of freedom.

But his crush, including his best friend Michael Benjamin, consider his passion for riding the waves to be childish and dangerous. Michael tells Daniel that it is better to focus on fishing. Daniel explains that you have to have time to live out your dreams and that you fish to live and not live to fish.

One day Daniel Alexander hears the voice of the sea telling him that he can only find the meaning of life if he finds the perfect wave and rides it.

Daniel listens to the voice and sets off on the great journey to find the perfect wave and thus the meaning of life.

Sergio Bambaren's book is a plea for the realization of his dreams, similar to The Little Prince and The Seagull Jonathan . The book has been translated into almost 30 languages.

On October 8, 2009, the animated film The Dolphin - The Story of a Dreamer , based on the novel, was released.

10 years later Bambaren published the novel The Homecoming of the Dreaming Dolphin (original title: Daniel - Ten Years later ), in which the story is told.
