A few years later he traveled to Europe on a sabbatical . In doing so, he later said, he came to a beach in Portugal , where he made friends with a dolphin . This encounter inspired him to write his novel The Dreaming Dolphin . The publisher Random House Australia offered him a publication. Bambaren turned down the offer because he did not agree to some planned changes. In 1996 he decided to self- publish . His debut novel became a bestseller that has been translated into 25 languages. The story is very similar to Richard Bach's novel The Seagull Jonathan . In the following years Bambaren wrote numerous soulful and catchy books, all of which deal with the sea and dreams.
