The torn April (original title: Prilli i thyer ) is a novel by Ismail Kadare published in 1980 in Albanian . The subject of the book is the law of blood revenge , which has been spread in Albania for hundreds of years and which is part of the Kanun .

The first edition was published by the Naim Frashëri publishing house in Tirana.

It tells the story of a young man, Gjorgj Berisha , from the mountainous northern Albania, who has to avenge the murder of his brother because of the blood revenge that binds him . His family has been in a feud with the murderer's family for 70 years, which was triggered by the murder of a guest of his family by a member of the other family. The novel goes into the origins and various rules of the canoe.

In a second, parallel storyline, a newly married couple from middle-class backgrounds drives through the Albanian mountains during their honeymoon. A journey into a dark, dreary world in which the bride Diana becomes more and more estranged from her husband, the writer Besian Vorpsi .

In the middle of the novel, the couple's paths cross with Gjorgj. Without having exchanged a word, Gjorgj and Diana are impressed by the brief encounter and then keep an eye out for the other.

Movie

The film Behind the Sun (original title: Abril Despedaçado ) by the Brazilian director Walter Salles from 2001 is based on Kadare's novel. Salles moved the story to Brazil.
