Dertu

Dertu is a place in Garissa County in Kenya , about 140 km west of the border with Somalia . It has an estimated 5,206 inhabitants, the majority of the Aulihan-Ogadeni- in August 2006 Darod - clan of Somali belong. Dertu was named one of twelve " Millennium Villages selected" in Africa, where the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations are to be implemented by way of example.

The place lies in a flat area at about 150-300 meters above sea level in the basin of the Ewaso-Nyiro river. The climate is arid with a rainfall of around 350 mm / year, with the latter varying greatly and droughts or floods every few years . (Nomadic) ranching is the predominant livelihood, with the average rancher keeping eight camels or cattle and 39 goats or sheep. In the rainy season the cattle are grazed in the vicinity, in the dry season up to hundreds of kilometers away. There is also small-scale trading. Due to drought, floods, overgrazing and epidemics in humans and livestock, a large part of the population has long been dependent on food aid. The only health post in Dertu is considered insufficiently equipped, as is the primary school with six teachers, five of which are paid by the government and one by the community. The literacy rate is estimated to be 17% for men and 8% for women, and possibly only 5% for nomadic ranchers. The average number of children per woman is nine, and many men have three wives. Almost all girls are circumcised , usually by the age of six . There are conflicts with other clans in the area.

As part of the Millennium Village project, the health post has so far been expanded, tablets for water purification and 2,890 mosquito nets distributed, latrines erected, vaccination campaigns carried out for the cattle, the irrigated cultivation of drought-tolerant early-ripening maize, sorghum, sesame, onions and cow beans propagated, and school attendance by Supported girls and built school facilities for nomad children.
