Deryck John Henri Ferrier (born July 20, 1933 in Paramaribo ) is a Surinamese sociologist and agricultural economist. From 1971 to 2015 he was Director General of the Center for Economic and Social Science Research CESWO (Center for Economic and Social Science Research) in Paramaribo, Suriname. He is best known as a social science researcher in Surinamese society.

Life

Ferrier is the eldest son from the first marriage of the first President of Suriname Johan Ferrier (1910-2010).

As an agronomist, he graduated from the state college for tropical agriculture (Rijks Hogere Landbouwschool, now Wageningen University ) in Deventer / Netherlands in 1954 . He began teaching agriculture at the Department of Agriculture in 1956. From 1961 to 1965 he studied sociology at the University of Wisconsin in the United States of America and received a Master of Science degree in sociology in 1965. 1956–1961: Agricultural engineer with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Suriname.

1957–1959: Agricultural teacher at the National Building Information Department, in the role of Head of Department, responsible for the administration of the Noord-Commewijne and Cottica departments.

1959–1961: Promotion to Agriculture Advisor and appointment to Agriculture Director Information Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

1965–1970: Scientific Director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Suriname and in this capacity responsible for the coordination of social science research for agricultural development planning.

1971–2015: Director of the Center for Economic and Social Sciences Research CESWO. Main contributions to national development planning.

1977: National Manpower Inventory Coordinator 1977.

1977–1978: Preparation of the coordinator “Multi-year Integrated Agricultural Development Plan” - MIAOP; responsible for the preparation of the files: - Perspective of demographic developments in the agricultural areas; - Human resources development program for the agricultural sector; - Agricultural Industry Development Program; - Institutions and organizations for the modernization of the agricultural sector.

1978–1979: Research and planning coordinator for the socio-economic development of the upstream areas of Suriname.

1979–1980: Co-coordinator “PARBO study”: project completion of regional and business, study for multi-year socio-economic planning with main responsibility for the branch development and organization of the transport sector.

1986–1987: Coordinator of the project “Inventory of Foreign Exchange Needs in the Private Sector”.

1998: Research coordinator to identify the structure and functioning of road traffic in the Paramaribo area.

Special functions

2001–2010: President - auditor of Agrarbank NV - author of scientific publications. May 8, 2019: Ferrier receives an honorary doctorate: As part of the 50th anniversary of the Anton de Kom University in Suriname, the board of AdeKUS has awarded Deryck Ferrier an honorary doctorate.
