Johan Ferrier
Johan Henri Eliza Ferrier (born May 12, 1910 in Paramaribo , Suriname , † January 4, 2010 in Oegstgeest , Netherlands ) was the Prime Minister, Governor and the first President of Suriname.
Life
Ferrier studied social pedagogy at the Gemeentelijke University of Amsterdam , where he received his doctorate in November 1950. A month later he went back to Suriname and accepted a post as a teacher. Shortly afterwards he became the school director and engaged in politics.
From May 16, 1955 to July 14, 1958, Ferrier was Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Minister for General Affairs ( Algemene Zaken ), as well as Minister of the Interior ( Binnenlandse Zaken ).
In 1968 Ferrier became governor of Suriname, which he remained until independence in 1975. On November 25, 1975, Independence Day, he became the first president. On August 13, 1980, he resigned under pressure from the dictator Dési Bouterse . His successor was Henk Chin A Sen .
Johan Ferrier was the father of eight children from two marriages: Helen de Miranda, Deryck Ferrier, Robin Ferrier, Stanley Ferrier, Cynthia McLeod-Ferrier, Leo Ferrier, Joan Ferrier and Kathleen Ferrier.
His daughter Kathleen Gertrud Ferrier was a Dutch politician and a member of the Second Chamber ( CDA ) and her half-sister Cynthia Mc Leod was a writer, whose works deal with the history of Suriname.
His eldest son, Deryck JH Ferrier M.Sc. (* 1933) is a sociologist and agricultural scientist and was director of the Center for Economic and Social Research - CESWO - in Paramaribo.
Johan Ferrier was also a grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Since the death of Nouhak Phoumsavanh , the former President of Laos in 2008, he has been the oldest former head of state in the world.
