Chandrikapersad Santokhi , called Chan (born February 3, 1959 in Lelydorp , Suriname ), is a Surinamese politician, former police chief and since 2020 president of Suriname.

Life

School occupation

After successfully attending the secondary school in Paramaribo , Santokhi studied from 1978 to 1982 at the Police Academy of the Netherlands in Apeldoorn . Immediately after completing his studies, he returned to Suriname and started working as a police inspector in Geyersvlijt, a district of Paramaribo, and later moved to the Wanica district . In 1989 he became the head of the criminal investigation department and in 1991 he was appointed police chief.

Political career

In the elections of May 2005, Santokhi was elected to Parliament as a candidate for the Vooruitstrevende Hervormings Partij (VHP) and from September 2005 to 2010 he was Minister of Justice in the third cabinet of Ronald Venetiaan . During his tenure, he advocated crackdown on drug trafficking .

He has been a member of the opposition party , VHP, since the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2010 . After the elections on May 25, 2015 , he again moved into parliament as one of nine members of the VHP. In the elections on May 25, 2020 , the VHP became the strongest force in the National Assembly of Suriname with its presidential candidate Santokhi.

Party leader

Following the resignation of Ramdien Sardjoe , Santokhi was elected as the new chairman of the VHP in July 2011.

CICAD

In 1995 Santokhi became the official representative for Suriname in the Comisión Interamericana para el Control del Abuso de Drogas (CICAD). CICAD is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States that coordinates drug policy in the Western Hemisphere. For this organization he was vice chairman from 2009 to 2010 and on December 6, 2010 he was elected chairman of CICAD for one year.

On July 13, 2020, in a special session of the National Assembly of Suriname (DNA), Chan Santokhi was elected President and Ronnie Brunswijk as Vice-President of Suriname.

The session was opened by Brunswijk, in his capacity as President of Parliament, and he entrusted the leadership of the DNA to conduct the election to the Vice-President of Parliament, Dew Sharman. Since there were no opposing candidates, the qualified majority present in the DNA was sufficient for election by acclamation .

After verifying that the candidacy had been correctly made and that the required documents were in place, Sharman stated that Santokhi had been elected President and Brunswijk had been elected Vice-President.

The inauguration of President Chan Santokhi and Vice-President Ronnie Brunswijk took place on July 16, 2020 in Paramaribo.
