Election to the National Assembly of Suriname 2020
The 2020 election to the National Assembly of Suriname took place on May 25, 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic .
The election resulted in the following distribution among the individual parties and party combinations for the 51 seats of the National Assembly of Suriname (DNA):
- Vooruitstrevende Hervormingspartij (VHP) - 20 seats
- National Democratic Party (NDP) - 16 seats
- Algemene Bevrijdings- en Ontwikkelingspartij (ABOP) - 8 seats
- National Party of Suriname (NPS) - 3 seats
- Pertjaja Luhur (PL) - 2 seats
- Broederschap en Eenheid in de Politiek (BEP) - 2 seats
In the 2020 elections, the NDP lost ten seats compared to 2015 and the VHP became the strongest party.
Before the first meeting of the DNA on June 29, 2020 after the elections, the party chairman of the VHP Chan Santokhi had successfully concluded the coalition talks with the ABOP, NPS and PL and now has 33 of the total of 51 seats. The MPs proposed by the coalition, Ronnie Brunswijk (ABOP), were elected chairman and Dew Sharman (VHP) vice-chairman of the parliament by acclamation . This was possible without a ballot, as no opposing candidate had been nominated.

- In Wanica, the last seeded candidate Miquella Soemar-Huur from ABOP on list four of the PL took part in the election. Since she received by far the most votes, she moved into the DNA as a member of parliament.
voter turnout
A total of 383,195 people were eligible to vote. According to the Centraal Hoofdstembureau Suriname on June 16, 2020, 274,714 valid votes were cast, which corresponds to a turnout of 71.7%.
